Properties and Applications of Infra Red Linear Variable Filters

Vortex Optical Coatings have developed processes for manufacturing Infra Red Linear Variable Filters (LVF). An LVF has a coating of wedged thickness, such that the spectral performance continuously changes as one travels along its length. They have been manufactured to cover the following ranges, 900-1700 nm, 1200-2500 nm and 2500nm to 5000nm. This document presents their general properties, the performance of a 900-1700 nm LVF, some applications and comments on producing them in volume.
