PICMA multilayer actuators

Physik Instrumente (PI) Ceramic has introduced encapsulated PICMA multilayer actuators with improved heat dissipation properties. A casting compound that does not impair the actuator displacement replaces the inert gas in the hollow space between metal bellow and piezo actuator.

An additional cooling of the stainless steel casing, for example with compressed air or water, can support the dissipation of heat generated by the dynamically operating actuator. This allows for working frequencies 10 times higher than an actuator without a casting compound.

The encapsulated multilayer piezo actuators are available in sizes ranging from 11.2mm × 40.5mm for 30µm travel and 11.2mm × 22.5mm for 14µm travel. Higher forces can be achieved with a version measuring 18.6mm × 22.5mm providing a minimal displacement to 14µm. For these dimensions, the actuators with casting compound are available at short notice. On request they can be manufactured in other sizes.
