French photonics industry grows six times faster than manufacturing sector

Photonics companies in France have grown by 40 per cent in the last five years, six times faster than the manufacturing sector, according to research carried out by Photonics France.

The study, which mapped the French photonics industry using data compiled from 2018, shows that the French photonics industry is experiencing strong growth compared to other industries, with an increasing turnover, number of companies and number of employees.

The research shows a 40.4 per cent growth in the photonics sector between 2013 and 2018, representing almost six times the growth in French manufacturing industry (7.12 per cent between 2013 and 2018) and almost twice the growth in freight transport (23 per cent between 2013 and 2018).

1,051 photonics companies make up the French photonics sector, the research found, with a combined turnover of around €19 billion.

Jobs in the photonics sector have grown by 12 per cent from 2013 to 2018, compared to minimal growth in all industrial sectors. In 2018, the photonics sector accounted for 73,000 jobs throughout France.

This study, although based on 2018 data, demonstrates that the French photonics sector has been expanding rapidly. Photonics France will publish an update to this research at the end of 2021.
