Highly refractive materials suitable for use high-brightness LEDs may soon be available. NuSil Technology has recently been granted a patent for silicone materials with a refractive index greater than 1.54, which could be used to make optics and lenses.

Elsewhere, a newly patented pigment, developed by Datalase, will provide simpler, cheaper and more environmentally friendly laser marking, with a longer lifetime and little maintenance.
