Qioptiq to acquire Point Source

Optics supplier Qioptiq is to acquire Point Source, a specialist producer of fibre optic laser delivery systems and lasers.

Point Source, based near Southampton in the UK, employs 70 people and achieved a revenue of £12m (US$22m) in 2007. It specialises in fibre optic laser delivery systems and lasers for commercial applications in biotechnology and semiconductor manufacturing.

Qioptiq CEO Benoit Bazire said: 'The acquisition of Point Source brings us a considerable fibre optic laser capability, which will be invaluable to the group - giving our client base a more complete choice of services and solutions.'

David Pointer, managing director of Point Source, said: 'Joining the Qioptiq Group opens up a range of international markets for us and provides a significantly broader range of products and services for our customers.'

He told electrooptics.com: '[Qioptiq] is an organisation within which we have a great opportunity and infrastructure to grow, but also the space to retain our identity and the sense of pride that we have earned over the past 17 years as Point Source.

'Qioptiq's strength in the European market is very attractive to us and complements our existing North America customer base. There will also be benefits to the supply chain, logistics and procurement of components.'

The acquisition of Point Source follows the successful acquisition of Linos by Qioptiq at end of 2006. Point Source will become part of Qioptiq’s Optical Systems Division headed by Qioptic’s vice president, Volker Brockmeyer. The division focuses on advanced optical system solutions for IT and communications, healthcare and the life sciences, industrial manufacturing and micro-optics.
