The rise of the East

Three major suppliers have expanded their presence in Asia. Andor has opened an office in Beijing, PowerLase has opened a Korean Service Centre, and Edison Opto has established another production facility in Heng-Li, China.

This will be the first Chinese office for Andor Technology, a supplier of digital cameras. The new office will enable the company to maximise growth opportunities in the fast developing Chinese market. The new office will work closely with Andor’s long established distributor in China, Beijing Oriental Scientific Development Company.

The British Ambassador to China, William Ehrman, officially opened the office as part of the Invest Northern Ireland trade mission to China involving over 40 companies organised with the assistance of UK Trade and Investment.

Similarly, PowerLase’s service centre will serve its existing Korean customer base, which includes Samsung and LG, provide customer care, service support, spare parts, and rebuild capabilities. It will also act as a test and collaboration facility to assist customers in the development of tailor made products, and a training facility for customer engineers, with plans to develop an application laboratory later in the year.

The office, located in the city of Daegu, will be staffed by a local team of highly skilled, UK-trained service engineers and support staff. The service centre will be jointly manned by Laser Spectronix, PowerLase’s distribution partner for Korea.

Finally, further spreading its reach in Asia, Edison Opto Corporation, a Taiwanese specialist high-power LEDs manufacturer, has established another production facility in Heng-Li, DongGuan in China. It is hoped its experienced R&D staff can transfer its achievements immediately to the Heng-Li factory in addition to developing local employees, ensuring a smooth communication and interaction between Taipei and Heng-Li.

Edison estimates that by the end of 2007 the Heng-Li site could produce up to three million high power LEDs per month, and up to 500,000 LED modules per month.
