Andrew Forbes
Andrew Forbes, professor at University of Witwatersrand, South Africa, and CEO of Button Optics
Teacher, janitor, secretary, receptionist, webmaster, systems engineer, sales rep, manager, director... and scientist. Andrew Forbes has served all of those roles, but joins the 2025 Photonics100 as a Distinguished Professor within the School of Physics at the University of Witwatersrand (South Africa).
In 2015, Forbes established the Structured Light Lab at the university. His technology spin-out, called Button Optics, aims to commercialise groundbreaking research and to stimulate the South African photonics and wider industry via international competitiveness.
