As the countdown begins to the Photonics Frontiers Award 2026, we are delighted to announce that three distinguished leaders in photonics will once again lend their expertise to the judging panel: John Girkin, Miles Padgett, and Chris Yates.

With the entry deadline fast approaching on 27 February, now is the time to showcase your breakthrough innovation.

John Girkin

A professor at Durham University and Fellow of both the Institute of Physics and Optica, John Girkin brings decades of experience in optical instrumentation for the life sciences. From designing the world’s first commercial diode-pumped Nd:YAG laser to pioneering advanced optical microscopy methods, John’s career bridges fundamental research and real-world healthcare impact.

His breadth of technical knowledge and long-standing commitment to advancing optical technologies ensure that entries are evaluated with both scientific depth and practical insight.

Miles Padgett

A Royal Society Research Professor and holder of the Kelvin Chair of Natural Philosophy at the University of Glasgow, Miles Padgett is internationally recognised for advancing the science of light. A Fellow of the Royal Society and recipient of prestigious honours including the Rumford Medal, Miles leads pioneering work in quantum-enhanced imaging as Principal Investigator of QuantIC.

His experience spanning fundamental physics, applied imaging and national research leadership brings exceptional rigour and perspective to the judging process.

Chris Yates

President of the European Machine Vision Association (EMVA) and a Photonics100 honouree, Chris Yates has long been a champion of innovation across the imaging sector. From founding 3D time-of-flight imaging specialist Odos to driving industry growth through Vision Ventures, Chris combines entrepreneurial expertise with sector-wide leadership.

His commercial insight and deep understanding of emerging technologies help ensure that shortlisted innovations demonstrate both technical excellence and real market impact.

Your innovation. Their expertise.

With this calibre of judges reviewing submissions, the Photonics Frontiers Award continues to set the benchmark for recognising excellence across the photonics landscape.

If your organisation is developing groundbreaking technology in imaging, sensing or biophotonics, this is your opportunity to stand alongside the sector’s most forward-thinking innovators. Nominations close on 27 February 2026.

The future of photonics is being defined now. Make sure your breakthrough is part of it.
