A distinguished professor of laser technology at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nuremberg (FAU), Michael Schmidt has led pioneering research in advanced manufacturing techniques.

Schmidt received his doctoral degree on the topic 'Process control of laser spot welding in electronics production' in 2002. Following his engagement in its executive board, he has also led the Bayerisches Laserzentrum as Managing Director since January 2005.
