New method measures the 3D position of individual atoms

The image of an atom produced by a quantum gas microscope is normally a round, slightly blurred speck. The researchers distorted it into a dumbbell shape (the image shows the theoretical prediction). The direction in which the dumbbell is pointing shows the z coordinate. Image: IAP/Uni Bonn
The technique deforms the wavefront of the light being emitted by the atom to determine all three spatial coordinates
