A graduate student who is yet to complete her doctorate at UCLA, Yoo Jung Kim is something of a rarity in the Photonics100. She is nominated due to her exciting work using photonic lanterns (PLs) for astronomical spectroscopic observations.
PLs are tapered waveguides that gradually transition from a few-mode fibre (FMF) geometry to a bundle of single-mode fibres (SMFs).
