Piezosystem jena has developed a 3D micro-positioning unit used during clinical examination of wounds. This technology is used in the project ‘Woundoptomizer’. The piezo positioner places a complex optical system into the wound under examination. The device operates at micrometre accuracy. Based on the information gained, essential cellular functions and local factors of wound diseases can be identified.
Existing examination methods generally cannot diagnose acute and chronic wounds in vivo. In addition, being able to evaluate local factors is essential for targeted therapy and for the wound to heal quickly.
Woundoptomizer is a joint project of Piezosystem jena in cooperation with the Clinic of Dermatology and Dermatological Allerology at the University Clinic of Jena, the Clinic of Dermatology at the University Clinic of Mannheim and the University of Heidelberg, Biolitec, and JenLab. There is considerable potential for the Woundoptomizer to be used as a tool for individual, diagnostic-directed therapy.
The project was presented at the Laser World of Photonics in Munich for the first time. A prototype of the 3D micro-positioning unit was shown to visitors to the show before the end of the duration of the research project. The Woundoptomizer project was supported by Germany's Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF).
