Defence deal secured by Thales

Qioptiq has secured a significant contract through Thales Australia to supply the Australian Defence Forces with its VIPIR-2 thermal imaging equipment.

The VIPIR-2 will be mounted to a light assault rifle and used for surveillance and target engagement, by displaying a clear image of heat sources and potential threats. The system’s rugged design and light weight (less than 1kg and powered by AA batteries) make it ideal for the adverse conditions of military applications.

Qioptiq has only recently secured a deal for 450 of the VPIR-2s to be delivered to the UK Ministry of Defence, with extensive technical support to be provided from its St Asaph site in Wales.
