SPIE exec elected to Edmund

Eugene G. Arthurs, executive director of SPIE, the International Society for Optics and Photonics, has been elected to the Board of Directors of Edmund Optics. As a board member, he will serve on the company's Executive Search, Nominating and Sales and Marketing Committees.

Dr Arthurs has been with SPIE for the past nine years, and previously served as president and CEO of Cleveland Crystals.

Earlier, Dr Arthurs served as president of Oriel Instruments, formerly Oriel Corp, and a director at LOT-Oriel and at Andor Technology. Since 1983, Dr. Arthurs served as technical director of Oriel Corporation, then following his promotion the following year to vice president of marketing and technology also served as a director of Oriel Scientific, UK, and a director and founder of Andor Technology.

He was also a manager of semiconductor systems business at Quantronix Corp, headed the laser department at Barr & Stroud, and was a strategic planner for Pilkington.

Dr Arthurs received his PhD and BSc degrees in Physics at Queens University, Belfast. He is a member of the Society of Photographic Instrumentation Engineers (currently SPIE), the Optical Society of America, AAAS, IEEE LEOS, and the Council on Optical Radiation Measurement. He also served on the board of the Photochemical Research Center, and on the Advisory Board of the Scottish Universities Physics Alliance.
