ASML, manufacturers of chip-making equipment, and the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) have signed an agreement to expand their existing collaboration over the next ten years.

The  collaboration and subsequent investment will allow both institutions to conduct semiconductor research, as well as research and training in areas such as plasma physics, mechatronics, optics, and AI, based on common roadmaps. Additionally, the agreement will support the establishment of a cleanroom at TU/e.

The updated agreement, which is an elaboration of a memorandum of understanding signed last year, will see ASML invest a total of €80m ($87m) into the partnership over the course of the next ten years. TU/e has also confirmed that its total investment will be over €100m, helping to support to-be appointed PhD students and the cleanroom building work.

The joint effort aligns with the €2.5bn Project Beethoven initiative spearheaded by the government of the Netherlands and the Brainport Eindhoven region to boost semiconductor production, innovation, and talent. At the same time, it aligns with the TU/e Future Chips flagship effort, under which the university aims to boost the development of chip technology.
