Completing its acquisition of InfraRed Associates’ assets, VIGO Photonics says it has expanded its mid-infrared detector capabilities as well as its presence in the North Amercian market, strengthening manufacturing and customer support in the region.
Valued at $8.4m, the transaction brings additional detector design and manufacturing expertise into VIGO’s portfolio, alongside InfraRed Associates’ established customer relationships across defence, industrial, medical and scientific sectors.
Widely used in applications such as gas sensing, thermal imaging and spectroscopy, infrared detectors operating in the mid-IR range rely on wavelengths between 2µm and 20µm, where many molecular absorption features at their strongest. As a result, mid-IR technologies are often central to environmental monitoring, industrial process control and security systems.

Through the acquisition and integration of assets, VIGO says it’s ability to deliver both cooled and uncooled detector solutions tailored to these application areas will be improved. And the additional local manufacturing and engineering capacity in the US will also help reduce lead times and support closer collaborations with customers working on application-specific system integration.
“This acquisition strengthens our position in the US market and adds important capabilities to our business,” said Adam Piotrowski, CEO of VIGO Photonics. “It supports our long-term growth strategy and allows us to serve customers with greater proximity, flexibility and technical depth.”

Specialising in infrared detector technologies, including devices designed for demanding sensing environments, InfraRed Associates’ integration into VIGO’s operations is expected to broaden the company’s product offering, particularly in segments requiring high sensitivity and stability, such as defence-related sensing and scientific instrumentation.
“The transaction creates new opportunities for growth,” said Frederic Rothe, CEO of InfraRed Associates. “[It] allows us to leverage world-class R&D capabilities and significant manufacturing scale to provide our clients with cutting-edge solutions.”

The acquisition follows earlier agreed contracts that indicated VIGO’s intent to expand into the US market. In recent years, the company has been scaling its US operations, including securing contracts for liquid nitrogen-cooled detector modules, developing application-specific systems such as methane monitoring solutions, securing framework agreements with US methane monitoring companies and obtaining certifications to sell to the US Department of Defense (now Department of War) and other federal agencies.
The latest acquisition aligns with this strategy by reinforcing domestic capabilities and enabling closer access to US customers, including those in regulated sectors such as defence and public safety. The completed acquisition will “significantly accelerate” the company’s US market penetration, said Piotrowski, as VIGO continues to build a US team and adapts its product offerings to meet specific domestic needs.
