Acquisition could ease fibre laser production

North American diode laser producer nLight is to acquire speciality fibre manufacturer Liekki, based in Lohja, Finland. Further terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

'This is a very important acquisition that integrates core technology for the rapidly growing markets for semiconductor and fibre lasers,' stated Scott Keeney, nLight's president and CEO.

The combination of the two companies' technology should provide customers with a complete supply chain, from basic semiconductor lasers and fibres to entire optical modules. In particular, the acquisition of Liekki will provide its patented Direct Nanoparticle Deposition fibre technology, used to increase the performance of high-power fibre lasers and amplifiers.

The transaction is subject to customary closing conditions and is expected to be complete by the end of 2007.
