Board of Laser Safety names executive director

The Board of Laser Safety (BLS) has promoted Barbara Sams to executive director with unanimous approval from the BLS Board of Commissioners.

Sams is a 13-year veteran at LIA and has contributing to the overall growth and development of the organisation. She joined the team in 1995 initially as assistant to the executive director.

Soon after, she assumed the responsibilities of administrative secretary to Accredited Standards Committee (ASC) Z136, and became staff liaison to the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). She participates on the ASC Z136 Administrative Committee (ADCOM), with full voting privileges.

Sams will be leading the BLS to help achieve its goal of improving the practice of laser safety by providing opportunities for education, assessment, and recognition of laser safety professionals. The certification of Laser Safety Officers and Medical Laser Safety Officers is a key component of this mission. BLS certification demonstrates that individuals serving in the field of laser safety have met the qualifications of education and experience, in addition to successfully passing the laser safety certification examination.

The BLS is affiliated with the LIA, a professional society dedicated to fostering lasers, laser applications and laser safety worldwide. The mission of the BLS is to provide a means for improvement in the practice of laser safety by providing opportunities for the education, assessment, and recognition of laser safety professionals.
