Laser Quantum to penetrate ultrafast market with acquisition of Venteon Laser Technologies

UK laser manufacturer Laser Quantum has acquired German company, Venteon Laser Technologies, a specialist in ultra-short-pulse femtosecond lasers, oscillators, amplifiers and characterisation equipment. It is hoped that Venteon’s short-pulse technology will allow Laser Quantum to strengthen its position in the ultrafast laser market.

Laser Quantum diversified into the femtosecond laser arena in 2011 with the purchase of Gigaoptics in 2011, also a manufacturer of femtosecond lasers and oscillators. With the purchase of its second entity in the ultra short pulse sector, Laser Quantum hopes that it can provide the photonics market with increased technological capability to advance knowledge in many areas of scientific research.

During the last few years, Venteon has used Laser Quantum pump lasers in the design and manufacture of its products. The interdependent nature of the relationship has led to the publication of a number of joint whitepapers on subjects such as the generation of sub-5fs pulses, the shortest commercially available, and Carrier Envelope Phase (CEP) stabilisation using a direct pump modulation method patented by Laser Quantum.

Under the new agreement, Venteon will remain in its current headquarters in Hannover, and will undertake increased R&D and manufacture, while Laser Quantum will hold responsibility for sales, marketing and after-sales support. The facility will add a greater manufacturing footprint for Laser Quantum that already has sites in Konstanz in Germany, Stockport, UK and San Jose in the United States.

In making the announcement, CEO of Laser Quantum, Dr Lawrie Gloster, said: ‘The combination of Venteon technology, our global reach and 20 years of expertise in laser manufacturing will drive accelerated scientific advancements, and lead to exciting lasers and instrumentation with ever-greater capability. Additionally, the vertical integration across our product range will lead to better value and support for our customers. Venteon has made its name with unrivalled innovation and it is tremendously exciting to be working closely with such a great team of people.’

Venteon CEO, Dr Thomas Binhammer, added: ‘Laser Quantum lasers have been an integral part of the Venteon product range for many years and being part of Laser Quantum gives us the opportunity to bring better products and services to a wider market.’
