Universities eye up £40m investment at Photonex

Universities from across the UK and Ireland have signed up for the Innovation Area at the Photonex 08, taking place in Coventry’s Stoneleigh Park on 15 to 18 October 2008.

With significant attendance from the investor community, show organisers estimate that there will be in excess of £40m ‘walking the floor’ and available for investment to support R&D in advanced photonic technologies.

‘Photonex will be a hotspot for universities looking for the funding that will allow them to turn phenomenal R&D work into long-term commercial success and bring new, exciting photonic technologies to the marketplace,’ said Alex Clarke of Photonics Cluster UK.

‘The step from the lab to the market is a significant one, but much of the work that we’re seeing from universities has the potential to be scaled and make real impact upon a host of industries; the financial investment will be a key aspect of this major step for the UK photonics industry as we look to retain our technology leadership in this area,’ Clarke added.

Among the universities who will be demonstrating their ideas at the Technology Investment Forum are Birmingham’s Aston University, the University of Aberystwyth and Bangor in Wales, the National University of Ireland and Sheffield University.
