S13720 MPPC silicon photomultipliers

Hamamatsu Photonics has developed the S13720 series, a new range of MPPC silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs).

Available in a ceramic and surface mount package, these MPPCs have a new structure to significantly enhance sensitivity in the NIR region, making them ideal for industrial lidar applications. They feature high photon detection efficiency of approximately seven per cent at 905nm, which enables longer range distance measurements and a better-quality signal. In addition, they offer a wide operating temperature and storage temperature range (-40 to +85⁰C and -40 to +105⁰C respectively) making these devices ideally suited to many industrial applications.

The S13720 series has a photosensitive area of 1.3 x 1.3mm, a 25μm pixel pitch and a fill factor of 47 per cent. Other features include a high gain of 1.1 x 106, reduced crosstalk occurrences at six per cent, while after pulsing effects are minimal. The typical dark count value is 500kcps.

The S13720 series is optimised for a variety of distance measurement applications, utilising light sources emitting in the NIR region. Example applications include lidar, distance measurement, flow cytometry, photon counting, high-energy particle detection and medical imaging.
