A pioneering specialist in silicon photonics, Frederic Gardes is a professor at the University of Southampton’s Optoelectronics Research Centre. 

In terms of how his work has benefited end users, a strong example is provided by the PN junction modulator he invented and proposed in this paper. His modulators have since become the backbone of silicon photonics circuits, forming a crucial component of every product developed around silicon photonics technology.
